What is First Friday?
The First Friday event is a community event in Downtown Lakeland. Streets are closed and businesses and organizations from around the community set up displays and activities to educate and entertain. Downtown businesses stay open late for shopping and dining.

What does event staff do?
In order to maintain a safe and orderly transition of our streets from vehicle-centric to pedestrian-friendly, the event will employ staff to clear the streets, direct the public, assist city staff in street closures, and monitor the perimeter of the events.

Event staff needs to be a person who:

  • Can stand for several hours at a time – often in direct sun
  • Walk several city blocks at a time
  • Lift and/or carry 40 lbs. at a time
  • Possesses a friendly attitude
  • Can provide excellent customer service to the public, First Friday participants and city staff
  • Has great communication skills

General Job Description:
Contract staff position (1099 employee, covered by workers comp)
$12.50 hour to start (after 6 events worked, pay increases to $13.00)
Provided Equipment:

  • Safety reflective vest and/or Staff Tshirt
  • Workman’s Apron
  • Clipboard/Pen
  • Appropriate Paperwork
  • Water throughout shift

Staff should wear comfortable CLOSED TOE shoes, not flip flops or slides, jean/khaki /solid colored shorts or pants, sunglasses, hat, etc. to protect from the sun as needed.

Detailed Job Descriptions

The following will give you a general idea of the duties required for each shift:
There are 2 shifts
Each staff person is assigned to a different city block to do the following:
SHIFT A (4 hours 2:30 to 6:30pm)
2:30–3:00pm
Approach parking cars in a friendly way and inform the drivers that the parking spaces must be vacated by 3pm. Provide them with alternative parking information (provided to you).
3:00pm-5:00pm

  • Cone spaces as they are vacated in the block you are assigned. Continue to direct the public where to park since on street spaces are not available.
  • Move cones for exhibitors who are unloading their materials. Help direct exhibitors to their designated spaces as needed.
  • Continue to direct the public where to park since on street spaces are not available.

5:00pm-6:30pm

  • Move barricades into position from the sidewalk to the street as assigned.
  • Help direct exhibitors to their designated spaces as they enter the zone. Direct them to Exhibitor parking once they’ve unloaded.
  • Monitor exhibitor set-ups. Contact event management as needed.
  • Take attendance of exhibitors in your block using the form on the clipboard. Turn in attendance sheet to event management and report any issues.
  • Pick up cones in zone and return to storage unit with zone partner (shift B worker).

SHIFT B (5.5 hours 4:30 to 10pm)
4:30pm-6:30pm

  • Move barricades into position from the sidewalk to the street as assigned.
  • Monitor the barricades, letting in only those who are identified as exhibitors.
  • Continue to direct the public where to park since on street spaces are not available.
  • Pick up cones in zone and return to storage unit with zone partner (shift A worker).

6:30-8:30pm

  • Other duties as assigned (6:30 to 7:30 or 7:30 to 8:30)
  • Take a break/Grab dinner (paid break -at least 1/2 hour)

8:30-10pm

  • Monitor the barricades, letting in only those who are identified as exhibitors.
  • Roll banner tightly as instructed and return to office.
